What are commodities?

Commodities are basic physical goods that are grown, extracted or harvested from the earth. They form the fundamental building blocks of the global economy, used to produce the food, energy and everyday objects around us. On the financial markets, they are standardized and interchangeable, which makes them easy to buy and sell.

Types of commodities

The natural-resources market is vast. These assets are generally grouped into several broad categories:

Agricultural commodities

Grown produce (soft commodities): wheat, corn, soybeans, sugar, cocoa, coffee. Their prices depend on weather conditions and harvests.

Minerals

Resources extracted from the earth, essential to industry and construction, such as iron ore or zinc.

Livestock

Farm animals raised for consumption, such as cattle or hogs.

Fossil fuels

Indispensable to the global economy: crude oil (WTI, Brent), natural gas, coal. Highly sensitive to geopolitical decisions.

Forestry products

Chiefly lumber, whose demand tracks the global real estate market.

Metals

Industrial or "base" metals (aluminium, lead, nickel), used extensively in the automotive sector and infrastructure.

Precious metals

Rare and historically regarded as stores of value: gold, silver, platinum, palladium. In times of crisis, gold protects capital.

Investing in different commodities

Before you get started, it is important to understand what moves the price of each asset.

Gold (XAU/USD)

A flagship asset, it reacts strongly to inflation and to the interest rates set by central banks.

Copper

Nicknamed "Doctor Copper," its price is an excellent gauge of global economic health.

Oil

Its price depends on the production quotas set by OPEC and on global energy demand.

Lithium & Uranium

Increasingly popular, driven by the energy transition, electric batteries and nuclear power.

How to invest in commodities?

There is no need to buy a barrel of oil or a physical gold bar. Several options are available to you:

CFDs (Contracts for Difference)

The simplest and fastest route, offered by RaiseFX. Speculate on both rising and falling prices without owning the asset, using leverage.

Commodity ETFs

Exchange-traded funds that replicate the performance of a commodity or a basket of resources.

Shares of related companies

Instead of buying gold, buying shares in a mining company — but the share price also depends on how the company is managed.

Futures contracts

A commitment to buy at a price and date set in advance. A complex market, often reserved for professionals.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any investment, commodity trading has strengths and limitations you should be aware of.

Cannot default

Unlike a company that can go bankrupt, gold or wheat will always have a physical, intrinsic value.

Scarcity

Resources are finite; rising demand and the difficulty of extraction support prices over the long term.

Diversification

Low correlation with traditional equities, which stabilizes a portfolio in the event of a market crash.

No dividends

Holding gold or oil generates no regular income; you only profit if the price moves (up or down via CFDs).

High volatility

Prices can swing sharply (drought, conflict, an OPEC decision). Strict risk management is essential.
