Stock trading platform: calculate your trade before you click

Apple reports its results on Thursday evening, Tesla the following week: that is often when people look for a stock trading platform. Not to buy shares and hold them for ten years, but to take a position, up or down, around an announcement, with a cost known in advance. RaiseFX, a broker regulated by the FSCA, gives access to 180 stock CFDs on the MetaTrader 5 platform, with no commission and with 1:10 leverage.

Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments. Leverage can amplify your losses as well as your gains, and an unfavorable move in the price can lead to the rapid loss of your stake. This information does not constitute investment advice.

Calculate your stock trade before opening the order

Rather than yet another ranking of the "best platforms", this page has you calculate your trade before you click: the margin blocked, the entry cost, the swap for each night and what a 5% move in the price does to your capital.
Enter the stock price, the number of shares and the planned holding period. The calculator applies the RaiseFX terms on stock CFDs: 1:10 leverage, 0 commission, fixed swap per night. The spread and the swap can be read in MetaTrader 5, "Market Watch" window, right-click on the stock then "Specifications".

The last line is the most important: with 1:10 leverage, a 5% move in the price represents 50% of the margin committed. This is the figure to look at before validating an order, not the hoped-for gain.

Available stocks: choose your stock

The catalog includes 180 stocks, listed mainly on Wall Street and on the major European exchanges. Each stock has its own page: price to follow, earnings dates, trading conditions and the risks specific to the stock.

Trading a stock as a CFD: what you are really buying

A CFD (contract for difference) on a stock is a contract made with your broker: you exchange the difference between the opening price and the closing price of your position, multiplied by the number of shares. You do not become a shareholder: no voting right, no share registered in a securities account.
In return, the CFD allows two things that a conventional purchase of stocks does not: taking a short position as easily as a long one, and tying up only a margin, 10% of the position value at RaiseFX, instead of the full amount.

Stock trading conditions at RaiseFX

At RaiseFX, there is only one type of account, the same for all clients: no "premium" offer reserved for large deposits. The cost of a stock trade is made up of the spread, with no commission at all, and a fixed swap if the position stays open overnight.
Leverage on stock CFDs is 1:10, versus 1:500 on Forex: this is deliberate, as stocks move more than a major currency pair. The account can be opened from a 100 € deposit.

Stock CFD or buying stocks in a securities account?

The two do not meet the same need. To invest over several years, receive dividends and vote at the general meeting, you buy the stock in a securities account or a PEA. To take a position over a few days around an event (earnings, product announcement, rate decision), the CFD is more flexible.

Trading a stock around its quarterly earnings

Earnings releases are among the most turbulent sessions of the year for a stock. For large US stocks, they often take place after the Wall Street close (22:00, Paris time): the price may then open the next day with a "gap", far above or below the previous day's close.
Practical consequence: a Stop Loss order is only executed at the first available price, sometimes far from the level set. Reducing the position size before the announcement, or waiting for the market's reaction at the open, are two ways of keeping the risk within what you calculated above.

The risks of stock CFD trading

Leverage multiplies losses as much as gains: at 1:10, a 10% fall in the price wipes out the entire margin of a long position. A stock can also open with a gap after an announcement and skip over your Stop Loss. Swaps add up every night the position stays open.
Only commit amounts whose loss would not endanger your situation, and read the legal documents before your first order.
Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments. Leverage can amplify your losses as well as your gains, and an unfavorable move in the price can lead to the rapid loss of your stake. This information does not constitute investment advice.
